Marijuana use among U.S. college students is accelerating faster than ever before, reaching it's highest point in 36 years.

As part of Inhale Labs' Cannabis in College study, a series of surveys shows that daily or near-daily (defined as over 20 times/month) marijuana use among students in college has reached 10.1 percent in 2016.

In 2014, this rate was only 5.9 percent, meaning that frequent marijuana use among U.S. college students is close to doubling in just 2 years. In 2007, the rate was 3.5 percent.

It's not only frequent marijuana use that has seen a jump. One in four (24.8 percent) college students have reported using marijuana once or more in the prior 30 days, up from 21 percent in 2014 and 17 percent in 2006. An even bigger hike occurred for those who have used marijuana in the prior 12 months. The rate is currently 47 percent, up from 34 percent in 2014 and just 30 percent in 2006.

Marijuana & Academic Performance

The study also found that 87 percent of those using marijuana daily or near daily have completed an assignment under the influence of marijuana in the prior 3 months. It was also found that 69 percent have gone to class under the influence in the prior 3 months and 62 percent have studied for an exam under the influence in the prior 6 months. A whopping one in five have taken an exam under the influence in the prior 3 months.

The average self reported GPA of all college students is 3.1. The average self reported GPA of students classified as daily or near daily users is 3.2.
